Transitioning from Summer to Back to School Schedule

As much as I love structure and routine, I have really enjoyed a loose schedule this summer! But as the end of summer approaches, it's time to start transitioning to a back to school schedule!

My advice it to give yourself about 1-2 weeks to gradually reset routines & expectations!

Here are some tips to help make the transition smoother:

1. Start going to bed and waking up earlier: Begin adjusting your sleep schedule gradually by going to bed and waking up 15-30 minutes earlier each day until you reach your desired school schedule. For our family, we have pretty much stayed with our same bedtimes and out of bedroom time. However, our mornings have been nice and slow! We will work on gradually getting back into routines of getting dressed and ready for the day quicker!

2. Set a routine: Establish a daily routine.  Having a structured schedule can help you stay organized and feel more prepared for the school day.

3. Get organized: Start gathering school supplies and any necessary materials for the upcoming school year. Organize their backpack and set up a designated study space at home. Have your children help you, this will give them ownership!

4. Plan meals and snacks: Prepare healthy meals and snacks in advance to ensure you have nutritious options throughout the day. Breakfast!!! I don’t know about your kids, but mine have been grazing more and eating less during meal time! It is time to get back to meals and less snacks. Otherwise, they will be starving at 9am at school.

5. Limit screen time! Gradually reduce the amount of technology & tv they use!

Remember this does not happen over night! Spend 1-2 weeks getting ready and have your child(ren) help you! Talk with them about where their homework space is, let them help you pack their supplies and pick out their water bottles!
