Recommended Products for Sleep Training

A lot of parents are so sleep deprived that they’re willing to throw a ton of money at magical products that will improve their child’s sleep.

Unfortunately, those companies are just really good at marketing and won’t always have the instant fix you’re looking for. Sometimes we find it works because it is exactly what your child needed, and sometimes it’s just a coincidence— or the fact that you were proactive helped your mindset around sleep which is actually what impacted or improved their sleep, not the product itself.

That isn’t to say there aren’t some GREAT products out there that will help set the stage for improving sleep for your little one. They may just not be the thing that suddenly makes your child go from 5 wakings a night to none.

All products I recommend are mostly for their sleep environment + positive sleep associations. They won’t make your child an independent sleeper which is often the secret sauce to improving sleep!

What products help with baby sleep?

A great sleep environment is one that is cool, pitch black, and has white noise. With that in mind, here are my tried and true recommendations:

  • set your thermostat lower for night time, use a cooling blanket or mattress pad, or sleep with a fan

  • slumberpod (HEAVENSENTSLEEP saves you $/affiliate link), otterspace sleep blackout curtains (HEAVENSENT10 saves 10%), or Blackout EZ window coverings for a pitch black room

  • any lectro fan white noise product (they’re all good, but I’m partial to the classic— ours is 8 years old and going strong with EVERY DAY use)

  • crib or pack n play (or toddler bed, etc)

Positive sleep associations:

  • swaddle or sleep sack

  • books

  • massage oil/lotion

  • lovey or pacifier

Other optional products could include:

Like I mentioned before, I’m not one to throw a lot of products at a problem when it’s not a guarantee that it will magically make sleep 10x better. All of these things can be a part of the sleep puzzle but you can’t usually just fix one piece of the puzzle and see the drastic changes you’re wanting. Sometimes it gets better for a short period of time, then you’re back to square one searching for another product.

One of the number one predictors in night time wakings is how a child fell asleep initially for bedtime— this is why sleep training/working on independent sleep improves and consolidates night time sleep! If you’re going to spend money, buy products that can support your sleep journey and focus on what will help give you lasting changes.
