What age is too late to sleep train?

Many parents come to us feeling like they’ve missed the boat on sleep training. That could be asking that at 6 months or 5 years and every age in between!

The good news is that there is NO AGE that is too late to sleep train (aka change habits around sleep). You could even do it as an adult, right now. Sleep training is simply behavior modification which can happen at ANY age.

The only reason age matters is really due to the options you have for changing those behaviors around sleep. It’s not easier/harder at any one age; they all have their own pros and cons or challenges.

Is it too late to sleep train my toddler?

Toddlers require their own special sort of sleep training 🤪🥴 But really, what we do as sleep consultants is more about parent coaching rather than child coaching. Because sleep training in toddlerhood + beyond is all about setting boundaries which can be especially difficult when they have the freedom to chase after you!

Some parents may find that sleep training an older toddler/child is easier than their infant because you can discuss things with a toddler. You can give them a heads up/prepare them better for the changes that may be coming. You can involve them more in the process. That doesn’t mean you’ll get zero pushback from them if they’re not sold on the idea of changing things around sleep! Like I said, each age can have their own unique challenges when it comes to sleep/sleep habits.

Quite literally everyone is worried that any one age is too late. We promise that you did not wait too long and you’re not doing it too early! The key factor in making changes around sleep is doing it whenever you’re ready to commit to it. If you’re playing the short game of quick fixes without looking big picture, that’s totally fine. If you’re ready for things to temporarily feel harder in order to see bigger, lasting changes after, then you’re playing the long game and are ready to sleep train!
